Sustainable Community Health in Guatemala
Ella Quincy (2026: Antigua, Guatemala) will work with her partner organization, Global Medical Brigades, alongside local community leaders and healthcare professionals to establish medical clinics and lead CPR and first aid education trainings. While in Guatemala, she will live with a host family in Antigua and take classes at La Union Spanish School.
Hi! My name is Ella Quincy, and I will graduate from Belmont University in May 2026 with a Bachelor of Science in Psychology. I plan to apply to medical school next May, but before that, I am taking time to learn Spanish and pursue global health projects that focus on education and community impact.
My passion for global health began with Global Medical Brigades, but it was shaped by a moment I will never forget. On my first Brigade in Honduras, as we were packing up on the final day, a man rushed into the clinic carrying his wife. She had a severe machete wound and had been bleeding. No one in their community knew how to help, so they walked for miles to reach us. We were able to stabilize her, but I couldn’t stop thinking: what would have happened if we hadn’t been there that day?
Since that moment, I’ve come to realize how critical, and often overlooked, education is in global health. This past March, I had the opportunity to lead a team of Belmont students and faculty through my partner organization to Guatemala, where we set up medical clinics and taught bystander CPR to local community members. Adding this health education component to our clinic was essential, and it’s something I hope to continue doing for the rest of my life. I am incredibly grateful to the Lumos Foundation for their belief in me and for making this work possible!
