Building Civic Muscle Through Media and Political Literacy
Kylee Ludwig is working as a social media strategist for Shout Out UK, a social enterprise founded to defend and amplify democracy through political and media literacy education. She aims to make education more accessible to young voters through short-form video content, while also inoculating British youths against mis and disinformation.
Hey! My name is Kylee, and I’m from Hillsborough, New Jersey. I came to Belmont to study Publishing and Creative Writing, where I discovered that to imitate the world in fiction, I must be an active agent in my own reality.
Writing is, at its core, a response to an author’s social and political circumstances, the process of asking difficult questions of the world around you and untangling your answer through prose. But having a sociological imagination is necessary for all productive citizens if we want to become agents of change.
This notion has become my focal point beyond college as I aspire to encourage media and political literacy among my peers. There is no unique human experience, and there is no unique political climate. What we see unfolding around us can only be combatted and dissected by studying our past as it overlaps with the present.
My love for creative writing, journalism, and forging connections led me to partner with Shout Out UK (SOUK), a social enterprise founded to defend and amplify democracy through political and media literacy education. Thanks to Lumos, I’ll be able to work from and learn alongside one of London’s longest-standing media literacy education advocates.
Weaponized disinformation, if employed, can undermine the fabric of democracy. By aiding SOUK overseas, I can learn first-hand how the spread of disinformation can be mitigated and combatted, which I can carry forward upon my return home. Above all, I hope to show others that activism isn’t an exclusive label, and taking the initiative to educate yourself in an age of polarization is radical in its own right.
