Managua, Nicaragua: Health in Hard Places

I graduated from Belmont in the spring of 2016. During my time at Belmont I studied classical vocal performance and nutrition. While I loved studying music, I realized that I had a much greater passion for dietetics and began to pursue nutrition seriously my junior year. I became involved with Slow Food Belmont as well as the Cultivate Project and learned a lot about growing and sharing food. These experiences ultimately lead me to apply for the Lumos Award, and I am honored to have been chosen as a recipient.

I am excited to work with Manna Project International and experience Nicaragua firsthand. I look forward to building relationships with those in Managua and working specifically with women and girls. I am passionate about women’s rights and believe that one of the biggest and most effective ways to tackle hunger and poverty is through the empowerment of women. It is my hope that my experience as an intern for Manna Project International will improve the lives of those in Managua and prepare me for a career as a dietitian.
