Lessons from 5 Year-Olds in Arusha

My name is Sarah Evans and I am originally from Bay Village, Ohio, a small suburb of Cleveland. Since I was in High School, I have felt passionate about serving disenfranchised youth who lack access to lifesaving resources, including proper education. During my undergraduate career, I have spent time working with several non-profit organizations including Catholic Charities and International Justice Mission as I have learned more about what I can do to assist these populations. I recently graduated from Belmont University with a degree in Sociology and a minor in Education. When I return from Tanzania, I hope to work for disenfranchised youth, specifically immigrant and refugee populations, as I help to make proper education more accessible and beneficial to those who need it most.

While in Tanzania, I will be working at the Sasa Foundation, an organization working to provide sustainable educational support to disadvantaged youth in order to reduce educational inequality. My main role will be in teaching English to students between the ages of 7 and 14, however, I will also be assisting in after-school activities. My personal goals are to learn more about teaching English Language Learners, explore Tanzanian culture, and to learn more Swahili! Additionally, I hope to be a positive role model for the students that I will be working with by showing them that they can achieve great things if they believe in themselves and their abilities.

Thank you for interest in learning a bit more about me and my work in Tanzania! I am so excited to share my stories with each and every one of you as I venture way out of my comfort zone and into an incredibly life-changing experience.
