Les Talibés

J’ai déjà mentionné les talibés mais il faut expliquer mieux leur situation. Les talibés sont normalement les fils des gens pauvres qui voudraient leurs fils apprennent le Coran. On peut commencer ses études à partie de 4 ans. Pour apprendre le Coran, les fils vont et habitent au daara (école coranique), et souvent les daaras sont les endroits les plus sales à Saint Louis. Quand on commence les études coraniques, on quitte les propres écoles publiques. Donc les talibés ne sont pas bien formés. Chaque daara est géré par un marabout qui enseigne le Coran. Le marabout contrôle complétement la vie des talibés et ça nous cause des problèmes. La plupart de jeunes talibés mendient pour survivre et pour apaiser le marabout. Si vous voyez un jeune garçon qui vous demande de lui donner argent, ça c’est un talibé. Il est triste, n’est-ce pas ?

Nous travaillons avec les grands talibés qui ont déjà fini leurs études. Après ils étudient pour deux heures le matin, ils n’ont rien à faire. La plupart vont au marché pour essayer de faire n’importe quoi. Nous leurs offrons l’opportunité d’améliorer leurs situations. Mais avant de participer dans notre programme, nous devons aller au daara pour parler avec le marabout. Nous lui expliquons notre système de financement (sans garantie ou intérêt). S’il ne nous aime pas ou notre programme, c’est tout. Personne dans son daara peut faire le programme. Cela s’est passé deux fois depuis je suis arrivé, et chaque fois ça me rend triste. Mais il y a beaucoup de marabout qui aiment notre bureau. Ils veulent seulement que les talibés apprennent bien le Coran mais après ça, ils veulent que les talibés travaillent.

Par exemple, nous travaillons avec un talibé qui s’appelle Abou Sow. Il n’a vraiment rien. Sa maison contient une chambre qu’il partage avec deux autres personnes. Nous n’avons pas vu même une toilette là-bas. Il est marié mais sa femme doit habiter dans un autre village. Mais il a gagné 19/20 sur son examen et il a beaucoup de motivation. Nous avons acheté une table où il peut vendre ses produits (qu’il a acheté aussi avec le prêt). Nous attendons le progrès mais nous pensons que ça va bien. Un autre talibé a épargné pour quatre ans (250 000 CFA) pour commencer son kiosk. Il veut un prêt pour agrandir son business et ses produits. Donc vous voyez qu’il y a beaucoup de talibés qui ne sont pas paresseux mais n’ont pas les moyens pour s’améliorer.

La majorité des associations caritatives existent pour aider les talibés. Projects Abroad (l’organisation avec laquelle je travaille) a aussi un centre des talibés. Il y a beaucoup de centres comme ça à Saint Louis. Ils enseignent aux talibé les choses que tout le monde apprend à l’école. Il y a aussi des toilettes et des places pour laver le linge et un petit centre de santé. Nous soutenons les daaras comme un système mais essayons de diminuer les effets du daara parce que tout le monde ici est musulman et veut que leurs enfants sachent le Coran. Peut-être un jour le système sera mieux pour les gens qui veulent apprendre le Coran.

Je n’ai pas pris beaucoup de photos au daara parce que il est très impoli et vous serez vraiment un toubab qui manque considération si vous preniez des photos. Regardez la photo du darra du dernier post.

I have already mentioned the talibés but I think I need to better explain their situation. The talibés are normally the sons of poor families who want their children to learn the Quran. They can start their studies as early as 4 years old. They go and live at a daara (a Qur’anic school), and normally the daaras are the dirtiest places in Saint Louis. When they start their Qur’anic studies, they leave the public schools. Therefore, the talibés are not very educated. Each daara is run by a marabout who teaches the Quran. The marabouts completely control the lives of their talibés and that causes us a lot of problems. Most of the young talibés must beg to survive and appease the marabout. If you see a small boy asking you for money, that is a talibé. It’s kind of sad, isn’t it?

We work with the older talibés who have already finished their studies. Each day after they study for about 2 hours in the morning, they have nothing else to do. Most just go to the market and hope to find some kind of work. We offer them a chance to better themselves and their situation. But before they can start our program, we have to go and speak with their marabout and explain to him our program (with no interest and no collateral). If he doesn’t like us or our program, it all ends there. Nobody in his daara can do the program. That’s happened two times since I came, and each time it just makes me sad. However, there are many marabouts who love our work. They want their talibés to learn the Quran, but after that, they want them to work.

For an example, we worked with a talibé named Abou Sow. He had absolutely nothing. His house consisted of one room that he shared with two other people. We did not even see a toilet there. He is married but his wife has to live in another town. But he scored a 19/20 on his final exam and has so much motivation. We bought him a table on which to sell his products (which he also bought with the loan). We are waiting to see his progress but we think everything is going very well. There was another talibé who saved for four years (250 000 CFA ≈ $475) to start his kiosk. He now wants a loan to expand his business and his products. There are many talibés who are not lazy but simply do not have the resources to improve their situations.

The majority of charities here exist to help the talibés. Projects Abroad (the organization with which I work) also has a talibé care center. There are many centers like that in Saint Louis. They teach the kids what everyone else learns in school. They also have toilets and places to wash clothing, in addition to a small health center. People support the daaras as a system but try to lessen the effects of the daara. This is because everyone is Muslim here and wants their kids to know the Quran. Maybe one day the system will be better for those who wish to learn about the Quran.
