Stories of Justice - Fighting Modern Day Slavery in India

Kate Wurm (2019-2020: Mumbai, India) will work as a communications intern in the Southeast Asia field office for sponsoring organization International Justice Mission, working to promote the end of sex trafficking in India.

I’m the youngest of 3 girls in a family of 6, if you count our corgi named Huckleberry. I grew up attending a small private christian school from the first days of kindergarten to the last days of high school. I wore the same plaid skort for the first half of my life. At the same time, my family attended and served at our local church, where my mom still works to this day.

Sarah, the eldest sister, attended New York University. Emily, the middle sister, attended DePaul University. I, the youngest, didn’t even want to go to college. I was hoping to be a part of a ministry movement called Youth With A Mission (YWAM for short).

My pride had me convinced that I didn’t have much to learn in the areas I was passionate about: Theology, people, traveling, etc… but boy was I wrong. My parents, ever so gracefully, encouraged me to give college a try. Within my first year and a half at Belmont University, I had already changed my major 3 times. It wasn’t until I began majoring in Religion and the Arts that I realized I never want to stop learning about the things I love.

In February of 2018, I went to India for the first time. I was overwhelmed in the best way possible by all the colors, sounds, smells, and tastes of India. The vibrancy of the country pulled me in, but the people are what made me fall in love. I returned to India a few months later in May, and felt an even bigger pull to return.

International Justice Mission has given me the opportunity to combine a few of my favorite things in this world: Jesus, storytelling, and India. I am equally excited and terrified for the adventure that lies ahead.
