Community Development in South Africa

Jeanette Morelan (2015, Port Elizabeth, South Africa) will work with United Through Sport on community development initiatives supporting orphaned, abandoned, and at-risk children. She will assist teachers with daily educational activities and broader community needs, coach soccer and develop an art program incorporated into the curriculum for the Junior and Senior School of Excellence. She will also volunteer for Mandela Day at Missionvale Care Centre.

My name is Jeanette! I am a junior Social Entrepreneurship/Mass Communications major at Belmont University in Nashville. Since I was little, I was always surrounded by people who supported and encouraged my dreams.

Through various volunteer trips and service opportunities, I began to realize that there are many people who don’t have the same access to opportunity that I did. This helped me realize that a passion of mine is providing opportunities for others to be successful. I believe that people desire not only to feel wanted and loved but also to be a part of their communities and world, to use their gifts and talents to make a difference.

Through my work in South Africa over the summer and through a career in community development after graduation, I aspire to bring opportunities for educational and economic advancement to people around the world. It is my hope that in helping them take charge of their own communities, we will create long lasting solutions to the social issues faced both at home and abroad.
